The second project that we completed this semester in art was a print making project. The first step in this project was to choose animals with texture. I chose a bunny and a hedgehog. Next we had to choose to different backgrounds to put our animals in, for this I picked a meadow for the bunny and a desert for the hedgehog. In order to plan out we had to create two full page sketches incorporating our animal and background. It was crucial that these filled up the entire page because we had to take a view finder and select smaller portions of our sketch that had a good composition. Then we had to do quite a bit of tracing and planning in order to use the linoleum to cut out our design. After all of the carving was done I made a few test prints to determine which colors looked the best with my design. After testing out colors, I decided I liked the way the violet looked on a light blue paper. Then I made my final four prints, chose my best three and was done.
Whilst doing this project, I learned a lot of new techniques. The main one I learned was how to carve with a linoleum cutter. I expected it to be similar to using the X-ACTO knife in the last project but it was completely different. However, I liked it much better. I thought that the linoleum cut much more easily than the paper in the last project. Also, I had a lot more control than I did with the X-ACTO knife. I think it's good that Ms. Rossi is exposing us to new techniques such as carving to broaden our horizon of tools. I am glad I had an opportunity to use this tool and gain experience with it.
Quite a bit of research had to go into making my design. I looked up a lot of animals and landscapes to determine which ones would make the best compositions. After that I had to choose my sources of inspiration and start planning out my design. I feel as though I could've been a bit more creative with my designs. A bunny in a meadow and a hedgehog in a desert are just a little too simple. If I could reselect what animal and background I did, I probably would have opted for something a bit more creative. I do like the way the composition of my sketches came out regarding where everything was placed and how much space was taken up. Also, texture wasn't too difficult to incorporate into my animals. Overall, I think the planning portion of my project went over fairly well.
I did not face too many challenges during the course of this project. Cutting wasn't too challenging so there was really no reason to screw up too badly in that area. However, you only had one chance to cut out your stamp so you really had to take your time and be very careful. Some parts of my design took a bit more concentration than the others. For example, my flowers were really quite time consuming and required a lot of precision. In conclusion, I think this project was a success and I am decently pleased with how my final result turned out
