Picking out which piece of artwork I felt most successful with was very difficult. In the end, I decided I was most pleased with the way my Matisse cut paper design came out. Although it was one of my first projects, I really like the composition and theme of it. I think the best decision I made was choosing jazz as my theme because there was so much to work with in that area. I was really able to fill up all the space on my design by utilizing many aspects of jazz. When we were first assigned this project I was slightly confused on how it was going to work. I was confused by the instructions and explanation and everything, but once I finally got to working on it, it was much easier for me to understand. I could even see how at first my cuts were a bit rougher but once I started to do it more and more, they progressed to be much neater and sharper. I was very happy to see how well this project turned out considering it was our first major project.
In my opinion, my printmaking project was my least successful project. I feel as though my craftsmanship was very sloppy and it looks like there wasn't any effort out into it. Also, it almost looks like it was a fifth grade art project. The theme of it with the bunny and flowers just didn't look very mature to me. The color combination didn't help to fix that project too much either. If I could go back and redo this project I would change many things. First off I would have chosen to do a different animal. Maybe a bird or something that wouldn't have come out looking quite as childish. Also, I would've spent more time working on the cutting of the linoleum to make it look more neat and then chosen a different color combination for my final product. Overall, I was very displeased with the turnout of this project and if I had the opportunity to redo it, I would change a lot. Two pieces of art that I really believe showed my progression as an artist were my contour shoe drawing and my perspective candy city drawing. I feel as though you can really see a progression through my drawing techniques and skills. The shoe drawing looked very unrealistic and sloppy. Although my city wasn't very realistic either, I feel as though it looks much more neat, especially the labels on my buildings. Also, my candy city was very creative and and looked like I put much more effort. Especially the use of my elements such as color and perspective made it look very put together unlike my shoe which didn't look realistic or like there was any effort put into it. Also, the subject matter did have an advantage toward my city because in my opinion, I find it much easier to draw in perspective and straight lines rather than organic lines that were used in my contour shoe drawing. I am happy that I am able to see an improvement and development through my drawing techniques and skills. The piece I beleive really reflects myself as an artist was my painting. I feel as though this displayed myself as an artist because everybody has different painting techniques and mine were able to be shown through this piece of artwork. Also, the photo I based my painting on was taken on a trip with family and friends in Maine and so when I see this painting it reminds me of how much fun that trip was. Also, even though this painting was based on a photograph I did modify it a bit. I decided to use a bit darker values and didn't make it quite as bright as it actually was in the photograph. I prefer the way that looks rather than such bright colors and I like how that displayed my personal preference in my piece of art. I changed up a bit of the scenery as well in order to create a better composition and have the painting look how I wanted it to look. All in all, I liked how I was able to link a memory to a piece of artwork and paint what I preferred in order to better express myself as an artist. Over the course of this class, I came to discover that my favorite medium to work with was paint. Personally, I preferred using paint because using only three colors, I was able to create many colors. You can't really do that with colored pencils or many other mediums so I thought that was very interesting. Creating value, shades, and tints were also very important to use while working with paint, otherwise your piece could come out very over powering. Although at first I was intimidated by using paint, I soon came to realize that it isn't very difficult to cover up any mistakes made. That helped me to feel much more comfortable with the idea of paint. Also, I thought learning about the color wheel and how all the colors had an effect on your piece and even mood was very interesting. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience using paint and hope to be able to try out using other types of paint like oil or water colors alongside using acrylic. |
